“The Hobbit” Illustrated Book

Since first reading The Lord of the Rings I’ve been in love with Middle Earth. This project is my love letter to Middle Earth and its denizens. The audience for this project is kids aged 10-15, as I want to invite young readers to engage with classic literature. I use bright colors, simple shapes, and interesting compositions to make the work friendly to a younger audience. the text also has pull quotes to engage the attention of younger readers.
The cover features Bilbo Baggins running after The Company to start his adventure. I focus on wide angles and large landscapes to give a sense of adventure.
Bilbo enjoys a pipe while the wizard Gandalf approaches. Gandalf is framed by the smoke rings, foreshadowing what both men have in common, and what Gandalf is about to ask Bilbo to do. The text features a pull quote.
Bilbo meets Gollum. This piece focuses on light to draw your attention first to Bilbo, and then to Gollum waiting in the shadows.
An example of chapter headings. Text is kept readable, and pull quotes are used to help engage middle-grade readers.
Thumbnails with value for the interior illustrations. These help me figure out composition and lighting before I get too deep into a piece.
