Character Cards
What if you could collect Dungeons and Dragons characters like Pokemon? These cards started as a fun way to show off my characters, but I wanted to design card backs to go with them. Each card includes a character’s weapon, spells, and status modifiers, which during play, would be used in tandem with a D20 roll.
The typography is bold and quirky, and matches the strong geometric shapes I create in the figures. I decided to use a pixelated blackletter to emphasize the medieval fantasy history of D&D, while also adding a vintage arcade twist.
It was important that I show each character’s personality and abilities through their card art, and since these two cards fall into the “Sol” class of cards, both also needed to feature the sun. I wanted to focus on strong shapes and silhouettes so each card could be recognizable quickly, and at a small playing card size.
Each character also has a shape theme they carry through the card. Zenith’s repeating shape is circles and ovals, and Myren’s is triangles. I made this choice to once again reinforce teh quick recognizability, and to unify the composition.
