“Finding Ellis” Short Comic for Froot Punch Zine

“Finding Ellis” is six page coming of age comic. It was created to be submitted to Melon Press’s third issue of the Froot Punch zine. Read it in its entirety below, plus thumbnails and character sketches!
Preliminary thumbnails. Here I figure out composition, story beats, and dialogue.
Initial sketches for Ellis. Ellis was relatively easy for me to figure out, I knew what I wanted them to look like pretty early on.
Round one of sketches for Caspian. Unlike Ellis, I had more trouble landing on a design for Caspian. I wanted to riff on a traditional merman design, adding more fish elements. I ended up lengthening limbs for swimming, and adding more fluidity in motions and shapes.
Caspian's turnaround. Since Caspian is made of more complex shapes and details than Ellis, I took the time to create a turnaround sheet for myself, which saved so much time when I was illustrating the final comic.
